💸 Can You Use the Wise App to Pay with Google Pay in South Africa?
So I’ve been using Wise for a while now — it's where my teaching company pays me in pounds (GBP), and then I just transfer the money into my FNB account here in South Africa. Easy enough.
But the other day, I noticed Wise has an app, and it got me thinking…
Can I pay with it? Like, can I use it like a tap card or link it to Google Pay?
Here’s what I found out (and I figured I’d share it in case anyone else is wondering too):
📱 Yes, the Wise App is Useful — Especially if You Get Paid in Foreign Currency
If you’re like me and your salary gets paid into Wise in GBP, then yes — downloading the app is actually super helpful. You can:
-
Get real-time notifications when money lands in your account
-
Convert GBP to ZAR quickly and easily when the rate looks good
-
Send it to your FNB or whichever South African bank you use — all from your phone
So if you’ve been doing it all from your browser, the app just makes it faster and more convenient.
🤔 But What About Using Wise to Pay Like a Card?
That’s where I got excited — I thought maybe I could use the Wise app the way you’d use SnapScan or a debit card linked to Google Pay.
But… here’s the reality:
❌ In South Africa, you can’t use the Wise app to “tap to pay” or link it to Google Pay.
❌ Wise doesn’t issue debit cards to South African residents (yet).
So unfortunately, you can’t just walk into a shop and tap your phone using your Wise balance. Not unless you have a Wise card that was issued in a supported country like the UK, EU, or US.
🌍 What If You Travel?
If you happen to live abroad part-time or are travelling to one of those countries, you can:
-
Get a Wise debit card delivered there
-
Link that card to Google Pay (or Apple Pay)
-
Spend your Wise balance directly in local currency
(And yes — Wise uses great exchange rates, way better than most bank cards!)
✋ But if You’re Just Based in South Africa Like Me…
Here’s what you can still do with the Wise app:
-
Receive money in GBP, EUR, USD, etc.
-
Hold and manage different currency balances
-
Convert currency when the rate is in your favour
-
Send money to your SA bank account in just a few taps
-
Get alerts and track your transfers in real time
So while you can’t pay in-store using Wise (yet), the app still makes life easier if you get paid in foreign currency like I do.
✨ My Honest Take?
If you’re working online, freelancing, or teaching like I am — and you get paid in pounds or dollars — definitely download the Wise app. It’s not magic, but it saves time, makes things easier to track, and you won’t miss out on good exchange rates.
But no, don’t expect it to work like a bank card unless you’ve got one of those actual Wise debit cards from overseas.
Let me know if this helped — or if you’re using another tool that works better for SA freelancers, I’d love to hear about it!
